Women were like that during first wave feminism. They just didn't say it. Betty Friedan's Feminine Mystique is literally full of data supporting the fact that women prior to 1963 were miserable.

Women are happier now than they ever have been. The problem is that men who used to be able to control women see our independence and happiness as a personal afront. Anything beyond being a doormat or that seems "disobedience" is seen as spiteful anger.
