Nate Berkus’ Gray Hair Struggle is What We Need

Let’s crack this conversation wide open, shall we?

Last week, an Instagram post by Nate Berkus, famed interior designer, made its way to me. I’m not sure how. I think the Universe just gets me. Nate (we’re on a first-name basis) is struggling with turning 50 and going gray. To that, I say one thing. Praise Jesus, yes, Nate!

As he notes in his post, Nate's struggle is: “I’m now 50, and my hair is going gray. I’m not 100% comfortable with it so this is what I want to know: do you embrace the gray and go natural? Or should I color it? Not sure how I feel about this.”

Nate. Same.

There is so much I love about this and I feel like we need to have this discussion as a collective body of men and women.

Men are not impervious to this struggle

Listen, as women, we spend a lot of time and money trying to figure out what to do with the head of hair with which we have been bestowed. This gets particularly dicey as we get older.

I am eight months into letting my hair just be how it wants to be. It’s 48 years old. It has earned its right to exist in this world as it is. The decision to make this transition was fraught. Will I look old? Do I even freaking care? The…
