It’s maddening. I don’t usually scour the “latest” filter. I struggle with finding new, solid writer when most of my home page is Editor’s Picks. I just took your science link and plugged in other words. That’s insane!
I just learned last month that membership is not mandatory for people publishing. I thought it was. I wrote a whole article about it why I won’t clap for writers who won’t pay the membership.
Solvency is a concern many have with Medium. Requiring the membership does two things 1) automatically increases revenue into the system. This benefits writers and Medium 2) does exactly what you said — gets rid of the scam accounts that won’t pay $5 a month to post crap.
They don’t have the man power to monitor these massive violations of the terms of service and reporting them makes us look like assholes. So an automated filtering out based on membership makes sense.
